Course Description:

This modular, on-demand course for technicians focuses on the specific activities operations and maintenance personnel need to understand and perform to ensure the safety lifecycle as contained in ANSI/ISA S84.00.01-2004 Parts 1-3 (IEC 61511 MOD) is improving the process safety performance at their facility or the facility they are associated with designing / constructing.
IEC 61511 mandates a performance-based safety lifecycle approach to risk management.  Operations and maintenance staff perform a critical role in the safety lifecycle.  In fact, operations and maintenance staff will determine whether or not the actual benefits of safety lifecycle compliance will be achieved or not.  Thus, it is imperative that operations and maintenance staff have a good understanding of the specific actions / tasks they need to perform to ensure compliance with IEC 61511 and, more importantly, to improve the process safety performance at their facility or the facility they are associated with designing / constructing.

You will be able to:

  • Define operations and maintenance requirements associated with the safety lifecycle
  • Recognize what information needs to be included in a “good” test plan
  • Explain the concept of imperfect proof test coverage and its impact on the facility
  • Describe the requirement to collect failure rate data and failure classification
  • Recognize the requirement for development of an approved vendors list for safety instrumented systems and how this relates to prior use
  • Describe the purpose of demand tracking and the associated requirement for root cause analysis
  • Justify testing deferral from a risk standpoint

Modules:

Module 1  -This module uses an incident case study to highlight the importance of planning, training, and practice when it comes to the technical operation and maintenance of equipment controls and safety devices.  The module also includes a review of key definitions, the IEC and OSHA standards ,an overview of the safety lifecycle, and the safety lifecycle flowchart. (30 minutes)
Module 2 -This module includes an introduction to Risk Analysis which covers how to evaluate risk, Safety and Independent Protection Layers (or safeguards), Risk Ranking, and SIF/IPL Requirements.  An introduction to SIF/IPL Requirements includes an introduction to SIL Verification Calculations, Safety Requirements Specification, and Cause & Effect’s, Safe Operating Limits tables, and both Process Safety and SIF Response Times. (32 minutes)
Module 3 -In this module, the first section covers Test Program Development which includes prior use justification versus certified devices, the functional test interval, and proof test coverage.  The second section covers Demand Rate Data Collection where you will learn what demand is, Demand Rate Management and Demand Rate Data Collection.  The final section covers Capital Project Requirements, including SIS requirements, Operation & Maintenance, and test philosophy alignment. (40 minutes)
Module 4 -This module begins with a section on Change Management.  It also covers Process Safety Metrics, including Leading and Lagging Key Performance Indicators (or KPIs.)  The last section includes Functional Safety Audits and Assessment topics. (20 minutes)
Module 5 -This module is a final course exam.  Successful completion of the exam will provide you with a certificate to show you have mastered the topics covered.
