ANSI/ISA-18.2, Management of Alarm Systems for the Process Industries, changed the world of alarm management in 2009 with the introductions of activities grouped into the alarm management lifecycle. That alarm management lifecycle has since become globally recognized as the standard, finding wide use across the process industry sectors.

A newly revised version of the standard developed by the ISA18 standards committee has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Changes include stronger requirements for control systems—that is to say, control systems need to have the functions to support good alarm management practices. There also are new requirements for package systems, such as compressors and heat trace systems – along with clarifications in some terminology.
