ISA Saudi Arabia Section College Outreach Program

As part of its continued effort to expand the value of ISA membership, the ISA Saudi Arabia Section (ISA SAS) outreach and student program conducted a workshop with King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) and University of Bahrain (UoB) Students. The objective of the workshop was to demonstrate the added value that the students can receive from being members in ISA, ISA-SAS and how membership could help them in improving their technical and leadership skills.

In addition, an action plan was developed with university student representatives to reinstate the ISA-KFUPM Student Section and expand it to include UoB and Jubail Industrial College.

How new technologies are revolutionizing automation

On 20 October 2015, Alexandre Corrêa, Development Director at Elipse Software, presented to the students of Escola de Engenharia in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on how new technologies are revolutionizing automation.

Corrêa introduced the concepts behind the Internet of Things and the Industrial Internet of Things, revealing how they are changing the way that devices are used in the industry. He shared examples of devices that can be connected to the Internet and how they can be remotely supervised or controlled via smartphones or tablets. He demonstrated an example application running in an Arduino platform connected to the Internet. Students downloaded an app on their own smartphones and gained access to control the circuitry via the interface to the Arduino.

The ISA Ireland Section held a successful seminar on the topic of Manufacturing Intelligence in November 2015. The event, held in partnership with ISPE, attracted more 100 attendees. The speakers covered an array of case studies, best practices, industry guidance and regulatory aspects associated with manufacturing data. On hand were speakers representing Biovia, Janssen, Eli Lilly, Vistakon, Capventis, Novartis, Genzymne, ESP, Pfizer and Odyssey Validation Consultants.

The afternoon workshop breakout session was based around pre-seminar survey information and received tremendous feedback for the level of information sharing and networking. This successful format will be used again at future seminars. A group of 14 exhibitors, offering insights into current and upcoming products and solutions, also participated.

Eli Lilly Plant Tour – IE43 – New Biologics Manufacturing Plant

ISA Ireland members, along with members from the ISPE, Engineers Ireland and IChemE, were hosted by Eli Lilly in Kinsale for a tour of its new state-of-the-art biologics (Large Molecule Pharmaceuticals) manufacturing facility. The IE43 facility is in the final stages of commissioning and validation.

The host provided an overview of the history of the Kinsale site, from its early beginnings developing small molecule pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities to its next  IE42 biologics facility using disposable technologies to its new larger-scale fixed equipment IE43 facility. The tour exhibited the Cell Culture and Purification Manufacturing areas and the critical utilities of the plant, with some of the new technologies employed in the plant. The plant is highly automated and utilizes an MES solution that will be incorporated into the working of the plant MBRs. This was another great event for ISA Ireland members and fellow professional association members.
