ISA88, Batch Control

ISA88 has established a new working group to evaluate ISA-88.00.02-2001, Batch Control Part 2: Data Structures and Guidelines for Languages and determine the best approach to updating it. The result will be a recommendation to the committee to either update the document as a standard or revise it into an ISA technical report.

ISA84, Instrumented Systems to Achieve Functional Safety in the Process Industries

ISA84 will meet in person in Houston on 9–11 May 2023. The meeting will be hosted by Wood Applied Intelligence.

Working groups are expected to meet to continue several ongoing projects within ISA84 to write and update a series of technical reports to aid in the understanding and application of the series, ANSI/ISA-61511, Functional Safety – Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector. Also, the following are expected to meet:

  • A recently launched working group to develop an ISA84 technical report providing guidance on how digital information can be applied during the operation and maintenance activities of the functional safety lifecycle, with a focus on the associated benefits.
  • A working group developing a standard to be titled Functional Safety of Process Safety Controls, Alarms, and Interlocks (PSCAI) as Protection Layers. This standard will set forth requirements for achieving functional safety using PSCAI as protection layers. The requirements for the design and management of alarms identified as part of PSCAI will be provided by ISA18, Instrument Signals and Alarms. The standard will apply to a range of industries within the process sector, including chemicals, oil and gas, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and non-nuclear power generation.

ISA5, Measurement & Control Instruments and Systems

ISA-TR5.9, Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) Algorithms and Performance, has been approved by the ISA Standards & Practices Board, with publication expected in March. This technical report documents common PID algorithms used in industrial control systems, including implementation methods, options, and performance measurements of the various algorithms.

ISA18, Instrument Signals and Alarms

ISA18 is currently voting on an update of ISA-TR18.2.3, Basic Alarm Design. There are three areas of design: basic alarm design, human-machine interface (HMI) design, and design of advanced alarming techniques. This technical report addresses considerations for basic alarm design, in which the alarm attributes are specified and designed based on the requirements found in the alarm philosophy and determined by rationalization (for example, alarm priority and setpoint).

ISA18 is tentatively planning to hold a face-to-face meeting in New Orleans during May, exact dates to be determined.

ISA75, Control Valve Standards

ISA75 is currently voting on ISA-75.27.01, Cryogenic and Low Temperature Seat Leakage Testing of Control Valves. This standard describes the preferred method of cryogenic and low-temperature seat leakage testing of sliding stem/linear motion control valves when required by the purchaser or user. Cryogenic and low temperature are defined as –196°C (–320°F) and –46°C (–50°F), respectively.

ISA88, Batch Control

ISA-TR88.00.02-2022, Machine and Unit States: An implementation example of ISA-88.00.01 has been published. This revised ISA technical report describes how to apply the concepts of ANSI/ISA-88.00.01-2010 Batch Control Part 1: Models and Terminology to automated machine states and modes. It provides examples of general and specific machine state models and procedural methods, cites real control examples as implementations, and describes specific tag-naming conventions.

ISA106, Procedure Automation for Continuous Process Operations

ISA106 is currently voting on ISA-d106.00.01, Procedure Automation for Continuous Process Operations, which will mark its first standard when completed. The document defines models, styles, strategies, philosophies, and life cycle for automation of procedures in the continuous process industries. Terminology is included that helps explain the relationships between these elements and terms.

This follows two prior technical reports completed by ISA106:

ISA75, Control Valve Standards

ISA75 is currently voting on ISA-d75.19.01, Hydrostatic Testing of Control Valves. The document establishes requirements and definitions for standard hydrostatic shell testing of control valves by valve manufacturers to prove the structural integrity and leak tightness of a valve’s pressure-retaining parts, including any closure parts, such as the valve body to bonnet joint, but excluding packings, bellows or other moving seals, and packing leakoff/purge/vent port connections.

ISA18, Instrument Signals and Alarms

To add to the changes in ISA18 reported last month in this column, Mary’beth Ramey has volunteered to serve as the committee secretary. Mary’beth is an Automation & Process Control Engineer with Celanese Engineering Materials – Hytrel®.

ISA18, Instrument Signals and Alarms

ISA18 co-chair Donald Dunn will join Cristobal Ruiz as co-chair of working group 1 to lead a revision of ISA-18.1, Annunciator Sequences and Specifications. This standard establishes uniform annunciator terminology, sequence designations, and sequence presentation. Watch for more information on the work and plans of ISA18 in the December InTech magazine.

ISA99, Industrial Automation and Control Systems Security

Long-time ISA99 co-chair Jim Gilsinn has stepped down from that role but will remain active in the committee. Johan Nye will join Eric Cosman as the new co-chair. Learn more about ISA99 and ISA/IEC 62443 standards and activities.

ISA5, Measurement & Control Instruments and Systems

ISA5 is conducting its first ballot on ISA-dTR5.9, Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) Algorithms and Performance. This technical report documents common PID algorithms used in industrial control systems, including the implementation methods, options, and performance measurements of the various algorithms.

October 2022

Standards Meetings at the ISA Automation & Leadership Conference

The following ISA standards committees will hold full-day meetings following the conference in Galveston, Texas, US:

10 November

11 November

The conference, held 7–9 November, will include a full selection of technical presentations on key industry topics including digital transformation, cybersecurity, IIoT, smart manufacturing, and process automation.

ISA18, Instrument Signals and Alarms

Several changes in the leader structure of ISA18 have been announced. Long-time co-chair Nicholas Sands of DuPont has been appointed to join Graham Nasby of CN Rail as co-managing director, in which role, among other responsibilities, they oversee committee actions to ensure compliance with ISA’s ANSI-accredited standards procedures.
